Miss UK Brooke Johnston in PETA Veg Ad campaign

Posing in nothing but a skimpy bikini made of lettuce leaves next to the tagline 'Turn Over a New Leaf-Try Vegetarian,' Miss United Kingdom Universe 2005 Brooke Johnston, who lived in St. Catharines until two years ago, appears in a brand-new ad for PETA.

The 26-year-old beauty queen stopped eating meat at age 14 when she learned about how animals suffer in factory farms.

"I decided that I could not support any industry that would treat animals like this, so I just gave up meat," says the mesmerizing blonde, who was also crowned Miss Earth Canada in 2003 and is proudly following in the footsteps of fellow Canadian Pamela Anderson—PETA's very first "Lettuce Lady." "Just think how you would feel if it were your dog or cat or your own child."

Why does Johnston feel that meatless meals are truly fit for a queen? Chickens are crowded into wire cages, have their beaks cut off with a hot blade, and are often scalded to death in defeathering tanks.

Calves raised for veal are torn from their "dairy" cow mothers and shackled in tiny, dark stalls where their joints swell from standing on slippery, waste-covered floors. During slaughter, cows' limbs are chopped off, often while they are still conscious.

A vegetarian diet can also help people keep fit and healthy—and sexy. Consumption of meat and other animal products has been conclusively linked to heart disease, stroke, obesity, and several types of cancer, and because the cholesterol in animal products clogs the arteries to all the body's vital organs, it can cause impotence in men.
