Investments of around Rs. 3,000 crores would have been made during the last one to two years, said S.V. Arumugam, Chairman of the Southern India Mills' Association.
After phasing out of quotas, Textile units have increased, and hundreds of manufacturing facilities have come up covering Coimbatore region. One million spindles have been added during the last one year.
Demand for spindles is 100 per cent more than domestic availability. Investments in the post-spinning segments is estimated to be between Rs. 750 crores to Rs. 1,000 crores and spinning sector it would be about Rs. 2,000 crores.
Between 1997 and 2005, China added 50 million spindles between 1997 and 2005.
