Federal Statistical Office Germany reported that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for Germany rose by 2.1 percent in January 2006 on January 2005.

Compared with December 2005, the index was down 0.5 percent. In December 2005 the year-on-year rate of price change was also +2.1 percent. The estimate for January 2006 based on the results from six Länder was thus confirmed.

The high year-on-year rate of price increase in January 2006 was still characterised by above-average price increases for mineral oil products, which has been the case now for nearly two years in a row.

Not considering heating oil and motor fuels, the rate of price increase would have been just 1.3 percent. Domestic fuel prices were up 31.9 percent compared with the same month a year earlier, while motor fuel prices were up 15.4 percent.

The 0.5 percent price decrease on December 2005 was mainly due to cheaper package holidays (–23.7 percent) and accommodation services (–17.9 percent). There was a seasonal decrease of those prices at the end of the Christmas holidays. The relevant rates of price increase on a year earlier were +0.5 percent and –0.6 percent, respectively.

Consumer-friendly year-on-year price trends were shown again, among other things, for information processing equipment (–6.9 percent), photographic and cinematographic equipment (–10.4 percent) as well as telephone and fax equipment (–17.4 percent).

Because of the coming seasonal change in the area of clothing and footwear, considerable month-on-month price decreases were observed also in that sector: Prices there were down an average 2.7 percent.

The harmonised consumer price index for Germany, which is calculated for European purposes, rose by 2.1 percent in January 2006 compared with January 2005. Compared with the previous month, the index was down 0.6 percent.

The estimate of 25 January 2006 was thus slightly corrected downwards. With its January result, the harmonised consumer price index was shown for the first time with the new index base year 2005=100 (before: 1996=100).
