Leapfrog IP is an integrated project running under the Commission's 6th Framework Programme of Research. The purpose of this largest-ever project in the European textile and clothing industry is to achieve a breakthrough in clothing technology and thus remove the handicap faced by EU producers in a labour-intensive industry.
In spite of approval in principle several months ago, and a beginning of the work by the 35- strong consortium of companies, institutes and universities from 13 European countries on May 1st 2005, it was not until January 2006 that the contract was formally signed by the EU Commission and that the advance payment of some € 5 million was remitted.
The 4 year project was initially envisaged by EURATEX itself which rapidly found a wide range of expert and enthusiastic partners within the enlarged EU. It is they who now need to develop the technology, to build the prototypes, and to carry out the essential demonstration activities.
As project co-ordinator through AADLT, the Association for the Advancement and Dissemination of Leapfrog Technology, EURATEX has the crucial task of ensuring that the whole project stays on time and that cost overruns do not occur.
Leapfrog IP is a business potential across the entire spectrum of textile, clothing, machinery and service companies in Europe.
It brings together a critical mass of European textile and clothing companies and research centres which will attempt to developand implement new ways of optimal fabric preparation for clothing production, automated garment manufacture, virtual garment prototyping, supply chain integration and mass customisation.
