Federal Statistical Office of Germany reported the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for Germany rose by 1.8 percent from March 2005 to March 2006. Compared with February 2006, the index remained unchanged.

In February and January 2006, the year-on-year rates of price change were +2.1 percent each. The estimate for March 2006 based on the results from six Länder was thus slightly corrected downwards.

With a weight of a good 8 percent in the weighting pattern of the CPI and in purely mathematical terms, that was more than half of the total price increase compared with March 2005.

Clothing and footwear prices were down by 1.6 percent in March 2006.

Prices of non-durable consumer goods (for example, food, energy, personal care goods and newspapers) in March 2006 were 4.8 percent higher than in March 2005.

However, consumer goods with a medium product life (for example, clothing, footwear, small electric household appliances) and consumer durables (for example, furniture, major household appliances, TV sets, computers and so on) were cheaper than in March 2005 (–0.8 percent and –0.4 percent, respectively).

The harmonised consumer price index for Germany, which is calculated for European purposes, rose by 1.9 percent in March 2006 compared with March 2005. Compared with the previous month, the index was up 0.1 percent. The estimate of 24 March 2006 was thus confirmed.
