Federal Statistical Office, the consumer price index for Germany rose by 2.0 percent from April 2005 to April 2006. Compared with March 2006, the index was up 0.4 percent. In March 2006, the year-on-year rate of price change was +1.8 percent, and in February 2006 it was +2.1 percent.
The estimate for April 2006 based on the results from five Länder (excluding Baden-Württemberg) was thus confirmed.
For two years now (since April 2004), the year-on-year rate of price increase has been influenced by the above-average price trend for energy (household energy and motor fuels): Not considering energy, the rate of price increase in April 2006 was +0.9 percent on April 2005.
Energy prices in April 2006 were 12.9 percent above the level of April 2005, which means that, in purely mathematical terms, they account for more than half of the total rate of price increase compared with April 2005.
The current rise of the year-on-year rate of change is due in particular to price increases for mineral oil products. In April 2006, motor fuel prices were up 11.8 percent on April 2005 (including regular petrol: +12.3 percent; supergrade petrol: +12.1 percent). Domestic fuel prices were up 21.4 percent.
For the other household energies, too, prices continued to rise above average (including electricity: +3.8 percent; gas: +19.6 percent; charges for central and remote heating: +19.6 percent). In the short-term comparison, especially prices of motor fuels (+6.1 percent on the previous month) and domestic fuel (+4.5 percent) increased markedly.
