The approval of permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) status for Vietnam is likely, as the US Congress would meet next week to consider it and the process would be completed in September.
However, the bill needs the approval of the US Senate and the US House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means.
The granting of PNTR to Vietnam could face the opposition due to apprehension about democracy and human rights in Vietnam and representatives with connections to textile-garment associations.
In case the US does not grant PNTR to Vietnam, Vietnam can still become a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) because the two countries have completed bilateral negotiations and signed an agreement this May.
If PNTR is not approved when Vietnam joins the WTO, both countries may suffer.
The US Government is supportive and speeding up the process of granting PNTR to Vietnam.
