Scottish Retail Consortium (SRC) says Christmas is the most significant event in the retail calendar with many outlets making up to 60% of their annual turnover between November and January. This Christmas is no different and is shaping up as a vital time for Scotland's retail sector.

With just a month to go before Christmas day here is what we're expecting:

- Christmas 2006 is set to be worth an estimated £2.4 billion to Scottish retailers.

- During the fortnight before Christmas, almost £1.1 billion will be spent in Scottish shops.

- It is estimated that Scottish shoppers will spend approximately £0.8 billion on Christmas related purchases.

- Approximately £460 million will be spent in retail outlets throughout Edinburgh during the festive season. Just over £550 million being spent in outlets throughout Glasgow.

- On average, Scottish shoppers will spend £370 on Christmas gifts. The most popular gifts this year are music and clothes, with gift vouchers, books and cosmetics and fragrances all making it into the top five. The top children's toy is likely to be the "Bratz – Forever Diamondz"

- On average, each household in Scotland will spend approximately £155 on food and drink, with the average Christmas lunch costing almost £14 per head.

- Christmas day costs approximately £950. Based on a 12-hour day this works out at over £1.30 per minute, and nearly £80 per hour.

- Approximately 4 milliontrees will be sold in the run up to Christmas in Scotland, worth almost £156 million.
