In the Farmers' Group Meetings, they will be informed through use of Posters / Charts about the precautionary measures to be undertaken to protect their cotton crop from pests/ insects, whenever incidence of pests/insects if noticed. The CITI-CDRA has engaged scouts and a Project Coordinator for implementing the above programme for the benefit of the farmers in Buldhana District.

The scouts posted at the villages are trained personnel equipped to guide the farmers on the spot on various steps required to be taken to facilitate good harvest with reduced cost.

The Scouts are available on day-to-day basis at the villages to extend the required help. The participating farmers are being advised on continuous basis about the pesticides, insecticides to be used and their recommended dosages to deal with any problem of pests /insects.

In Farmers' Group Meetings, conscious efforts will be made to create awareness among farmers about the care and precautions to be undertaken at the time of picking of Kapas, its storage and transportation to deal with the problems of contamination. Sowing of cotton in Project Villages is over by end of June 2007.

The germination of cotton in the fields is reported to be satisfactory. Adequate rains have been received in the Project Area. The participating farmers have opted for cultivation of Bt. Cottons such as Bunny, Mallika, Rasi-2 and Brahma varieties on a large scale. Last year the CITI-CDRA had successfully implemented FLD Project on Production Technology in four villages from Chikhali and Buldhana Talukas of Buldhana District. The average yield was 9.35 quintals of Kapas per acre in Project Farms as compared to 6.25 quintals of Kapas in Non-Project Farms.

Similarly the participating farmers received higher net average profit of Rs.11975/- per acre in Project Fields as compared to the average net profit of Rs.6016/- per acre in Non-Project Fields. Thus with proper transfer of Technology, knowledge and creating awareness about the modern methods of cotton cultivation, hold out a promise that production of cotton in Maharashtra would definitely go up.
