Khadi, the versatile fabric and the pride of India, has made its way into the hearts of millions of people in the last five years. This has been possible because of Government's continuous efforts to promote and upgrade the uses of khadi.
Statistics show the gradual increase in the production as well as sale of khadi. During 2002-03, khadi fabric worth Rs 443 crore was produced and sales reached around Rs 577 crore. Value of khadi produced in 2005-06 touched nearly Rs 468 crore while revenue collected was about Rs 628 crore. In 2006-07, production value represented over Rs 491 crore while returns touched more than Rs 663 crore.
With the efforts of Government-run Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVCI), the sector was able to create around 8 lakh jobs for weavers.
Another dream project — 'Mission Khadi' — was also implemented last year, with the aim of boosting production of prêt-e-porter made of khadi.
KVIC was successful in its plan of standardizing khadi, selling them under a common brand and establishing common facility centres to service small khadi institutions.
Through Mission Khadi, KVIC expected to target buyers across the globe with many varieties of khadi like khadi silk, khadi wool and khadi cotton to make it a fashionable fabric liked even by the masses and the new generation.
