The Union Minister for Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises Shri Mahabir Prasad inaugurated Coir Board's new Display and Information Centre.

Inaugurating the Centre Shri Prasad said, highly labour intensive and export oriented coir industry was providing livelihood to about half a million poor village artisans, predominately women.

Since the raw material used in the industry being the coconut husk, which is considered as a waste after taking the coconut nut, the coir industry epitomizes the concept of 'wealth out of waste'.

Considering the increasing national significance of this traditional industry, the Government included coir in the National Common Minimum Programme, the Minister added.

Shri Mahabir Prasad said that the Board had already been implementing several programmes for market promotion but the need to establish more centers to expose the vast potential of coir products by arranging attractive display at various strategic locations across the country was badly felt.

With this intention the Board opened this new Display cum Information Centre in New Delhi to showcase coir products for foreigners to see and select.

Further, by setting up of the Display Centre, the overseas buyers would get an opportunity to see the different varieties of coir and handicrafts products, all the information related to the export, domestic market, exporters directory, catalogues, Board's various schemes etc, the Minister concluded.

The Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs, Shri Vayalar Ravi, the Chairman of Coir Board Shri A.C. Jose, Secretary, Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises Dr. Chandrapal, Shri Pravir Kumar & Shri Sesh Kumar Pulipaka, Joint Secretaries of the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises and other officials were also present on this occasion.
