Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 924 in the week ending Sept. 8, a decrease of 189 from the prior week. There were 1,646 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 202 from the preceding week.
There were 14,028 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 1, an increase of 253 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 21,407, a decrease of 29 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 1 were in Puerto Rico (4.2 percent), New Jersey (3.0), Pennsylvania (2.6), Rhode Island (2.6), Michigan (2.4), Arkansas (2.3), Massachusetts (2.3), Alaska (2.2), Connecticut (2.2), and Oregon (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 8 were in Michigan (+1,741), Georgia (+1,268), Arkansas (+455), Massachusetts (+405), and Washington (+381), while the largest decreases were in California (-4,349), Texas (-2,470), New York (-2,168), Florida (-1,998), and Wisconsin (-1,770).
