NBF views SATRA 'truly amazing' furniture facilities

Around 20 members of the National Bed Federation (NBF) came to SATRA Technology Centre to view its new 24,000 square feet extension, which houses the recently expanded furniture testing facilities.

During the visit, the Federation was shown that by having upholstery leathers and textiles tested before use, manufacturers could avoid costly customer complaints.

Case studies were presented that highlighted issues such as light fastness, colour transfer, abrasion, rub resistance, seam slippage and pilling.

The visitors were also given extensive access to the furniture and bed testing facilities and the flammability and chemical analysis laboratories.

During the tours, the delegates viewed demonstrations of tests on beds, seating, wood finishes, floorcoverings and foam fillings.

John Shipman, Manager of SATRA's furniture testing business, also showed delegates how SATRA tests mattresses to the EN 1957:2000 test method using its own, specially-built machine.

The NBF spent three days in the area as part of its Autumn Forum, which was held at the nearby Rockingham Speedway track.

John Shipman presented a talk at the Forum on the subject of material and product testing and how it can add value to furniture products, help in their development and marketing activities.
