Govt directs IT-BHU to assist Bhadhoi carpet industry

Central Government has asked the Institute of Technology of Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU) to provide the artisans of Bhadohi carpet industry with technical aid and guidance.
Moreover, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) that acknowledged seven Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) clusters in the 11th plan has recognized the carpet industry of Bhadohi as the eighth cluster under its Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) facility.
Research and Survey of the carpet belt will be done under the supervision of experts from DST's Techno Entrepreneur Promotional Program center at IT-BHU. The research study will also involve an examination of underground and surface water for arsenic, cadmium and chromium pollution that is caused by chemical dyeing and washing of carpets.
In an exclusive interview with fibre2fashion, Dr P K Mishra from the Department of Chemical Engineering said “The project starts on December 1st, 2006. The first phase will be doing survey to find exactly what are the technical difficulties being faced by this industry to become better equipped to compete in the world market.The first phase will be over in six months. The prior work done by my group already indicates towards number of technical problem faced by this industrial cluster."
He further added, "As per the out come of the survey report, the second phase of this project will empasize on creatingthose facilities within the region so as to save money and time. The effort will be to supply required technology indigenously. With the use of modern technology, this cluster will certain become competitive in the international market.”
