Retail sales in Scotland in August increased by 3.6 percent overall and 0.4 percent on a like-for- like basis.
This is a much slower rate of growth than has been seen in recent months. Sales growth in Scotland has been well ahead of the UK for most of this year, but August figures suggest that the gap is narrowing.
It is dangerous to draw firm conclusions from only one month's figures – tget have seen occasional poor months before. However, the like-for-like figures have been on a slow downward trend since March and whilst the 0.4 percent August figure may be an anomaly, it does correspond to this general trend.
Retail trade organization Scottish Retail Consortium, in conjunction with the Centre for Retailing Studies in Scotland, have launched a special report, The Scottish Retail Review. This publication provides an analysis and views of experts on the current state of retailing in Scotland.
