He served as the president of the SDC.
He was also made a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and a Freeman of the City of London and Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Dyers.
He joined AATCC in 1988 and has been active in the Publications Committee.
Lewis is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and a member of the Society of Dyers and Colourists.
He has published a book on wool dyeing, 198 research papers, and 50 patents.
A native of the United Kingdom, Weston, who died February 26, 2000, at 78, spent his final years in Charlotte, N.C., in the United States.
He graduated from the University of London in 1941. His career was spent in chemical and dye applications research, first in Manchester, UK, from 1941-1963, and later in Charlotte, N.C., from 1963-1983.
He retired from the position of research director with Sodyeco, a division of Martin Marietta.
Weston's research bore fruit in 23 patents, of which 16 of the earliest relate to methods for the application of fiber reactive dyes.
Other patents and publications record the development of alternatives to sodium dichromate for the oxidation of sulfur dyes and the chemistry and application of colored thiol-sulfonates (Bunte salts).
AATCC named the Millson Award for Invention for Henry E. Millson, a noted inventor who was also head of dyes research for American Cyanamid.
Millson, the 1958 recipient of AATCC's Olney Medal for outstanding achievement in textile chemistry, endowed the Millson Award in 1979 with the stipulation that he never be considered a candidate.
After agreeing to that condition, the Association promptly named the award in his honor.
Headquartered in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, US, AATCC is the leader in education, technology transfer, and test method development for the textile design, materials, and wet processing industries. It is dedicated to education, technical applications and research, and communication.
