In a move to promote Extra Long Staple (ELS) cotton, the South India Cotton Association (SICA) proposes to have Front Line Demonstration (FLD) on cotton farming for select group of cotton farmers.
SICA has selected to exhibit three farmers groups initially to its FLD to be organised at its model cotton farm developed at its Coimbatore premises. Super Spinning Mills Ltd, a city-based textile company has funded the SICA's model cotton farm.
The FLD will emphasise on implementing the farming techniques to increase the new ELS cotton, Sara-II, developed by the Super Spinning Mills under its own R&D effort.
SICA sources reveal that three cotton farming groups, which would be drawn from regions with the opportunity for cultivation of ELS cotton types would be supported with all inputs essential on crop management practices. This will inspire them to start seriously the ELS cotton cultivation in their areas.
Initially, FLD will select farmers from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, besides the North Arcot district of Tamil Nadu, which are famous for cultivating ELS cotton DCH-32.
