Said Mr. Kearney in his letter: “The sixty trade union leaders from some forty different countries who came together for the Executive Committee of the ITGLWF held earlier this month in Santo Domingo had the opportunity of hearing first-hand the government's vision for the sector, in which social dialogue and respect for fundamental rights were presented as vital ingredients in promoting a strong and vibrant textile, clothing and footwear industry”.
He warned that however, the denial of union registration and the dismissal of union members at Knitex is incompatible with that vision, and runs the risk of doing irreparable damage to the image of the Dominican industry at a time when the sector is already in crisis.
The ITGLWF has urged the Minster of Labour to intervene to ensure that the union is granted legal registration and the workers are reinstated with payment of lost wages.
