KVIC mulls discontinuing discounts, Khadi retailers opt to persist

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has decided that, it no longer would be offering the usual 20 percent annual discount to its customers from October. But the retailers' associations have resolved to carry on providing such discount to the buyers.
It is almost 54 years now, that the khadi ashrams all across India have been providing such discount. Data of KVIC reveals that, out of the overall sale of khadi textile and village industry items during the year, more than 80 percent takes place only during the 108 days commencing October 2, when the discount sale is on.
Though the retailers have decided to continue the discount, they would decide on the quantum of the same in a retailers' and manufacturers' meet with participants from all over Uttar Pradesh. However, unofficially though they have made up their minds to carry on offering 20 percent discount to the buyers, a formal announcement will come soon, as soon they sign an agreement to this effect.
Apart from the discount offered by retailers', the customers will also get benefit of another 10 percent rebate that State Government offers on khadi. However, this 10 percent rebate will be available only during the initial 60 days of sale that commences on October 2. Once the retailers decide on the final price at which they will be offering khadi products to the buyers, then this rebate of 10 percent will be provided on the final price.
The khadi industry in the country each year provides employment to around one million women and other persons belonging mainly to the lower strata of society. There are around 200,000 weavers and spinners in UP alone of which 15,000 are in khadi industry and rely on the khadi sales for earning their livelihood.
