Handicrafts Fair generates Rs. 900 Crores of business

The 30th edition of Indian Handicrafts & Gifts Fair closed on 20th October, 2010. There were 2200 exhibitors from 28 states of India covering 97,000 sq. mtrs of space, displaying more than 900 products lines during four days of event. It has been reported that 5000 buyers from various parts of the world visited the fair and negotiated business with exhibiting companies.

Overseas buyers observed that the IHGF is the right place to find new things. The fair was trend setting and inspiring, Prices were comparatively attractive, many products on display were exclusive. Most of the buyers found IHGF to be much bigger than other fairs. The highlights of the fair were an exclusive spectrum of furniture procured from leading exporters and displayed in the Hall of Excellence' located just outside the main venue giving it a most prominent position.

The other high light was a themed showcase of craft products from India's eastern region. IHGF was built on excellent variety consisting of sectors like houseware, decorative and
gifts, fashion jewellery and accessories, bags, cane and bamboo and eco-friendly products, Christmas decoratives, candle and incense sticks, home textiles, furnishing, floor coverings, homeware and accessories etc. These products groups comprise many types of crafts, lifestyles, utility items.

Overseas buyers have shown specific interest in many product lines particularly Indian textiles, furnishing, furniture, home décor, curios, bags and fashion accessories, children products, crocheted work and laced goods. Buyers have also shown interest in the products with antique finishing, cane items, coir mats and jute bags.

A random survey has indicated that participating companies have received 6000 trade enquiries from the visiting buyers evincing interest in the product lines indicated above.

Speaking at the Valedictory Ceremony, Smt. Panabaki Lakshmi, Minister of State for Textiles, said that exporters should develop new products in demand in the insternationl markets and also explore new markets for to enhance export from this sector.

She also said that many schemes including integrated skill development project, and design development centres were in place besides many other schemes with the help of the Government.
