“The Free Trade Union of Workers of City New Garment Factory is one of three unions at the workplace, and is the majority union. The union has been actively working to protect the rights of workers at the factory, which has caused tensions with management.
This is clearly a case of management taking an opportunity to fabricate a grievance and pursue legal action solely in order to prevent the union from defending the interests of its members.
The ITGLWF has urged the company to immediately drop all charges against the union leaders and establish good industrial relations' based on social dialogue and the full respect for national law and international standards.
The Global Union Federation has also warned Minister of Labour Nhep Bun Chin that the employer practice of resorting to the courts in order to destroy unions is seriously undermining efforts by the Cambodian government to promote a culture of respect for national laws and international standards in the country's garment industry.
