J Crew puts off fur sales as PETA celebrates

Lady Heather Mills McCartney with a bottle of champagne and accompanied by a giant "fox," celebrated outside a Santa Monica J.Crew store to mark the fashion retailer's announcement that it has ended all fur sales and is pulling all fur from its stores during the busiest selling season of the year.

The celebration, which will include PETA members holding signs that read, "J.Crew: Now Fur-Free," comes after an intense 11-week boycott campaign against J.Crew.

McCartney helped launch the boycott with a protest outside J Crew's Madison Avenue store in New York on September 12.

The 11-week boycott campaign involved coast-to-coast protests, petitions, letters, and phone calls.

PETA and J.Crew entered into successful negotiations after PETA's Youth Division, peta2, mobilized thousands of Street Team members to contact the company.

The campaign received additional high-profile support from Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee.

The victory means that J.Crew—which began pulling fur items from its stores and catalog on the busiest shopping day of the year, the Friday after Thanksgiving—joins Forever 21, Gap Inc, Banana Republic, and others that have stopped selling fur.

J.Crew got much of its fur from China, where not a single law protects animals on fur farms.

An undercover investigation, which made international headlines earlier this week, found that millions of dogs and cats in China are bludgeoned, hanged, bled to death, and strangled with wire nooses for their fur, which is often deliberately mislabeled as fur from another species.
