PTEA seeks adequate raw material supply for textile sector

The Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA) Chairman Waseem Lateef recently urged the Pakistani government to ensure sufficient supply of raw materials to the textile industry in order to help the exporters to keep their export commitments and sustain their competitiveness in the global market.

The official said that, the recent hike in the polyester fibre prices by the domestic producers would add to the troubles of the textile exporters, as this would lead to a rise in the production cost and render Pakistan's textile exports uncompetitive in the global market.

He stated that, while the value added textile industry is already badly hit by the shortage of polyester staple fibre together with the rise in its prices, the manufacturers of the polyester staple fibre are apparently preparing to further increase the commodity price.

Further, the official said that, the polyester staple fibre prices were already soaring due to the anti- dumping duty imposition on import of the polyester staple fibre into the country and the recent rise in the prices was also a result of the same.

He added that, the floods has already caused the country to lose a part of its cotton output, as a result of which the country is now confronting a shortfall of around 30 to 40 percent of its overall cotton requirement, and the textile exporters in the country have no other choice but to switch to production of polyester fibre, which serves as an alternate for cotton.
