CSO releases Retail Sales Index

Central Statistics Office released Retail Sales Index for the month of October.

Retail Sales volume increases by 4.3 percent The volume of retail sales (i.e. excluding price effects) increased by 4.3 percent in October 2005 compared to October 2004. There was a monthly decrease of 1.5 percent.

If Motor Trades are excluded the annual increase was +4.9 percent and the monthly change was –0.8 percent.

The value of retail sales increased by 6.3 percent in October 2005 compared to October 2004 and decreased by 1.5 percent in the month.

However, if Motor Trades are excluded, the annual increase was 5.7 percent and the monthly change was –0.7 percent.

September 2005 is the latest month for which final detailed figures are available.

The three-month July 2005 – September 2005 volume figures show that, compared with the three months ending June 2005:

The largest increase in the volume of sales was in the Department Store (+ 7.2 percent) sector.

The largest decrease in the volume of sales was in the Furniture & Lighting (-8.6 percent) sector.

All figures in this release are trading day and seasonally adjusted. The seasonal factors are based on unadjusted indices up to December 2004.
