Federated to shut distribution center in Washington, DC

Departmental store operator Federated Department Stores Inc intends to close its New York Avenue distribution center in Washington, DC in spring 2007 as part of an ongoing process to maintain efficiency and reduce duplication in its nationwide logistics network.
The multi-level, 758,000-square-foot facility currently employs about 250 persons. As the closing date approaches, the company will be working to identify other positions within the Federated Logistics & Operations organization for affected employees.
Merchandise currently handled at the New York Avenue distribution center will be shifted to existing Federated operations in Joppa, MD, Secaucus, NJ, and Stone Mountain, GA. It plans to sell the New York Avenue facility so it can be productively reused or redeveloped.
Federated, with corporate offices in Cincinnati and New York, is one of the nation's premier retailers, with fiscal 2006 sales expected to be more than $27 billion.
Federated operates more than 850 department stores and more than 720 bridal and formalwear stores in 49 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico under the names of Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Famous-Barr, Filene's, Foley's, Hecht's, Kaufmann's, Lord & Taylor, L.S. Ayres, Marshall Field's, Meier & Frank, Robinsons-May, Strawbridge's, The Jones Store, David's Bridal, After Hours Formalwear and Priscilla of Boston.
