Three to four thousand workers at Kunming Municipal Textile Group staged a four-day strike as they were not satisfied with the plant's restructuring programme.

Company employees now await the April 1, 2006 decision on compensation terms and other issues.

Kunming Textile employees were dissatisfied with measures on wages passed at a meeting of the Employees' Representatives Committees.

This meeting was held on March 6 in the absence of workers from the plant's main factories.

Yunnan Textile Plant a state-owned enterprise, set up in 1934 was restructured as a state-owned holding company with a limited liability company structure in 1996.

There are five companies in the group which employ more than 4,000 workers.

Workers of various factories downed tools assembling in front of the main plant demanding to talk to management on March 13.

The factory had laid off workers with lower compensation plans than usual levels offered to other workers from state-owned enterprises.

Ms Tan, said, they will receive 881 yuan for each year of work in the factory as compensation and that is calculated up to 30 October 2004.

Those who are retained after the restructuring, will have to work 12 hours a day.

As for the unfair distribution of shares, the workers said management's action was not transparent and they suspected some shares were going secretly into the management hands.

Only senior management cadres attended the Employees' Committee meeting. The ideas expressed in employees committee are not those of the majority of employees, Tan said.
