METRO Group again makes about 3,000 apprenticeship training positions available in an effort to match the high prior-year figure.
In 2006, too, the company is living up to its training commitment, thus making an important contribution to the German industry's training pact. Currently, METRO Group offers training in 21 apprenticeship occupations and provides a triple-digit number of additional training posts in line with the "Job Opportunity Qualification" scheme.
"Training and qualification of young people has been a concern of special importance to us for many years", explains Zygmunt Mierdorf, Chief HR Officer of METRO Group. "In 2006, too, we want to enthuse numerous young people for our business and demonstrate that retailing is an exciting field of activity offering excellent career opportunities".
In addition, METRO Group is very active in providing assistance to unprivileged young people. Since 2004, the VAMB program (integral training program of METRO Group in cooperation with vocational education centers) has been in existence.
Educationally-handicapped young people with training contracts at seven vocational education centers do part of their practical training at the stores of the METRO Group. Starting in September 2006, another three vocational education centers in Greater Berlin will join in. This means that the total number of participants alone in this project for unprivileged young people will add up to about 100.
With its diversified offer for job starters, the METRO Group is one of the biggest training company in Germany. At a trainee rate of 8.4 percent, the company holds the third position among the DAX-listed companies according to a current study of the Handelsblatt magazine (issue of 1 June 2006). In February 2006, the German Federal Employment Agency awarded to METRO Group its "Training Certificate" in recognition of the "exemplary training performance of METRO Group".
