The dinner speaker on Tuesday evening was Lieutenant-General Marc Caron, CMM, MSM, CD, Commander of the Army. LGen Caron praised the work that had been done by CTI and DND to establish and nurture the collaborative relationship between industry and the military.
He said the men and women in the armed forces were extremely proud of their clothing systems and equipment, and thanked the suppliers present for their contribution to the comfort, safety and security of Canada's soldiers. He referred to the Defence Policy Review released that day by the government, and said DND was about to challenge the industry to provide new products to meet the military's expansion and transformation from the "cold war" to the "three block war" (3BW) and the corresponding gear requirements. This met with an enthusiastic response from all the textile, clothing, footwear and personal equipment suppliers in the audience.
Conference Co-Chairs Eric Barry (on behalf of CTI) and Judith Spanglett (on behalf of DND) were extremely pleased with the turnout, the enthusiasm of participants, the qualify of the presentations, and the overwhelmingly positive feedback from both government and industry representatives in attendance.
Liz Siwicki of CTI was especially pleased that a number of invited guests, including Members of Parliament and government officials from departments with which CTI deals on an ongoing basis, accepted CTI's invitation to visit the Trade Show to learn more about the textile industry and firms. M.P.s included the Hon. Walt Lastewka, representing the riding of St. Catharines, Ontario and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works and Government Services Scott Brison; Claude Bachand, representing the riding of St. Jean, Quebec and Bloc Quebecois spokesperson/critic on National Defense matters; and Anthony Rota, representing Nipissing-Timiskaming and Chair of the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs of the House of Commons Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs. Government officials included representatives from Industry Canada, International Trade, Finance, the Canada Revenue Agency, and the Canada Border Services Agency.
