UOP LLC, a Honeywell company, announced that KP Chemical Corp has reloaded its Parex Process unit in Ulsan, South Korea with UOP Parex ADS-37 adsorbent.
KP Chemical will use the adsorbent in its UOP Parex Process unit to increfase capacity of para-xylene (PX) for the production of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) used to make polyester for fabric and polyethylene terephthlate (PET) chips for carbonated soft drink and water bottles.
The reload, completed in June 2007, considerably increased the capacity of the KP Chemical facility and makes KP Chemical the 15th Parex operator to utilize ADS-37 since its introduction by UOP in 2004.
“Worldwide demand for para-xylene is growing at over six percent per annum, and our Parex ADS-37 adsorbent has been accepted by the petrochemical industry at an unprecedented rate,” said UOP Senior Vice President and General Manager of Catalysts, Adsorbents and Specialties Carol Bibb. “With its ability to reduce bottlenecks in existing Parex units resulting in more para-xylene production, this adsorbent will help KP Chemical to support growing demand.”

The Parex ADS-37 adsorbent now aids in the production of more than 5,500,000 metric tons of para-xylene per year, approximately 21 percent of worldwide capacity.
KP Chemical is one of the largest producers of para-xylene in Korea. The company is a recognized leader in the export of petrochemical products with around 95 percent of its products going to China, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Russia, Europe and the U.S. UOP LLC, headquartered in Des Plaines, Illinois, USA, is a leading international supplier and licensor of process technology, catalysts, adsorbents, process plants, and consulting services to the petroleum refining, petrochemical, and gas processing industries.
