East Coast Retailers Were Challenged by Unseasonable Warmth. Cool and Stormy in the West. Severe Storms Battered the Plains and Midwest.

Weekend Review (20-21 October 2007): The cold front responsible for the widespread severe weather in the U.S. interior moved off the East Coast providing the Eastern Seaboard with less humid conditions. Meanwhile, a powerful storm came ashore in the Pacific Northwest and strengthened over the southern Rockies.

Much colder temperatures accompanied this storm with highs generally in the 40s and 50s across the Rockies and western provinces. Moderate to heavy rains occurred across most of the western third of North America.

Measurable snows were recorded in higher elevations, although some wet snow did mix in with rains in some locations along the Front Range and Western High Plains. Ahead of this strong storm, increasing temperatures occurred in the eastern half of North America with highs back into the 70s and 80s accompanied by mostly sunny skies. Florida, however, was wet through the weekend.

Last Week (week-ending 10/20/2007): It was a week of strong contrasts across North America. In the East, persistent high pressure provided unseasonably warm temperatures. Departures from typical mid-October temperatures averaged 15 to 20 degrees. Late week, temperatures were in the 80s as far north as the Mid-Atlantic and accompanied by unusually high humidity levels.

Eastern Canada experienced high temperatures well above normal into the 70s. Out West, it was a different story as a series of strong Pacific storms pounded the Pacific Northwest and Rockies. Cooler than typical temperatures accompanied these storms and included measurable snowfall in much of the Intermountain West.
