Bestseller joins Danish initiative for ethical trade

Respect for others and focus on sustainable development are not new issues to Bestseller as we have been working with our Code of Conduct (CoC) for many years. Now, we join a new exciting initiative that will hopefully make a difference.

The purpose of the Danish Initiative for Ethical Trade is to gather experience and knowledge about business practice in the developing countries and the new growth markets such as China or India and thereby help Danish companies make sure that the suppliers as a minimum live up to international conventions. The initiative is a unique cooperation between the business world, ngo's and trade unions.

“At Bestseller we will continue the ongoing work with our Code of Conduct, but we hope that our involvement in the Danish Initiative for Ethical Trade will give us an opportunity to find common constructive solutions to the ethical challenges and dilemmas that we often face in our daily work” says Tina Larsen, CoC responsible at Bestseller.

“To begin with the primary focus of the initiative will be on human rights, working conditions, and responsible supplier control, but we hope that in time we can expand the cooperation and also focus on environment and animal welfare. We also hope that the initiative will take on some concrete issues such as handling long working days and creating education programmes for the employees at the factories,” Tina says.

Every year a list of goals to be reached within the next year should be decided for every member of the initiative. The members will then be measured on their ability to reach the goals and their ability to improve their way of working with the ethical issues.
