Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) has reached yet another important milestone for advancing science and technology in Saudi Arabia, following an announcement that it has provided annual research funding to Umm Al-Qura University.

This support represents part of SABIC's wider program to enrich Saudi Arabia's research and technology capabilities and will see collaboration with several other flagship universities in the coming times. Ultimately, this will enable the country to realize its ambitious economic and industrial objectives, while also advancing the education of Saudi Arabia's population.

SABIC provided the funding in the presence of Dr. Bakri bin M'atoog Al-Assas, President of Umm Al-Qura. Also present was Dr. Abdullah bin Saeed Al-Amri, Manager, External Networks and Projects, SABIC Technology and Innovation. SABIC's growing relationship with Umm Al-Qura University, which is located in the Holy City of Makkah, will address a number of the country's relevant industrial research needs and will help achieve technology advancement in a sustainable manner, through education.

“SABIC's programs to support research and innovation at universities have evolved significantly over time and cover a wide range of areas such as chemicals, petrochemicals, metals, fertilizers, polymers and industrial catalyst applications” said Dr. Abdulrahman Al Ubaid, SABIC's Executive Vice President of Technology & Innovation. “These programs have now expanded even further to also support research on safety, environment, health, pollution and the recycling of industrial waste through scientific methods”.

In addition to the donation, SABIC will also collaborate with Umm Al-Qura University in a variety of other ways, such as through encouraging and facilitating the participation of Umm Al Qura's faculty in various upcoming conferences, workshops and scientific seminars. Moreover, SABIC will also be assisting the university's faculty in the development and registration of patents.

“SABIC's collaboration with Umm Al-Qura University will be essential towards building synergies in research, education, and enterprise”, said Dr. Abdulrahman Al Ubaid, “as well as in harnessing science and technology to address the global challenges of our time – for the benefit of Saudi Arabia and beyond.”
