The Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) is the first Government undertaking to receive the Certificate of Geographical Indication for Mysore Silk, elevating it to a brand name status for its exclusive use.

From now on, all Mysore Silk sarees from KSIC will bear the logo IPI (Intellectual Property India).

KSIC will also possess patent rights for Mysore Silk brand.

This certificate would overcome misuse of Mysore brand, informed P Vijayan, Managing Director, KSIC.

Geographical Indication Registry (GIR) is a Central government body in Chennai. GIR was established to protect the Intellectual Property Rights for Indian commodities under the Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.

GIR is a sign used on goods with exclusive geographical origin and own qualities or reputation of their place of origin.

Kanjeevaram Sarees, Basmati Rice, Swiss Watches and Dutch Tulips are other commodities to receive GIR certificates.
