Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) countries seems to be a happy hunting ground for Egypt as the trade balance shifts in its favor shortly.

Chairman of the Africa and COMESA section at the Egyptian Trade Representation Authority, Mohamed El-Sadek informed that exports to COMESA countries amounted to US$372 million in 2004 compared to only US$95 million in 2000. At the same time, Egypt's imports from COMESA countries in 2004 totalled US$238 million.

El-Sadek said that Egypt is fast becoming the second largest country exporting products to COMESA countries after Kenya, and for the first time the balance would tilt in its favor since its entry in the year 2000.

Textiles, leather products, pharmaceuticals, agricultural products and ceramics are the sectors where Egypt has been performing well.

Established in December 1994, COMESA replaces the former Preferential Trade Area (PTA) which had existed since 1981.
