AAF takes stand on steep downslide of textile sector

Unemployment in the textile industry is likely to reach one crore if exports do not catch pace in the coming one year. During the inauguration of the Asian Apparel Conference in Mumbai on November 22, Mr Shankarsinh Vaghela, Union Minister for Textiles told the press “Direct employment of 10 lakh as well as indirect employment might be affected.”
Mr Vaghela also assured that the Government would surely come out with timely strategies to bring relief to the existing situations of the textile industry.
He pointed out that industrialists are not taking full advantage of the Technology Up gradation Fund Scheme and emphasized on the issue that Indian apparel industry needs to strengthen its production values, quality and competitiveness in order to remain floating in the international market.
Mr James Arthurs, Chairman, Gerber Technology also stated that while China contributes about 31 percent to the global apparel production, India supplies only 3 percent.
In the conference, Asian Apparel Federation (AAF) represented 10 Asian nations that included India, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Korea, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand.
Mr Kishore Biyani, Managing Director of Future Group, expressed dissatisfaction with the way market was slipping out of the manufacturer's hands. He said, “During Diwali, we sold more of electronic goods than clothes as the electronic goods industry was successful in pushing its products.”
