Create awareness to avoid levy of anti-dumping duty - expert

If there is proper awareness, textile and garment exporters can avoid, imposition of anti-dumping duties in their exports to overseas countries, said the Director of the National Tariff Commission, Mr Zia.

Mr Zia said this, when addressing the members of the Pakistan Textile Exporters Association in a training session, while reviewing the situations under which anti-dumping duties were levied on exports of textiles.

Giving instances he said, European Union (EU) imposed anti-dumping duty on Pakistani bed linen first in 1996 for a period of five years and then once again in 2004. Similarly South Africa also imposed a duty of 43 percent on the same product in the same periods.

Giving an example, he said Peru had recently re-imposed anti-dumping duty for a third time on Pakistani bed linen because the Pakistani exporters failed to reply to the questionnaire sent by the Peruvian authorities, leading them to re-impose the same.

He stressed on the need for a serious approach and compliance to the questionnaires and also emphasized the proper application and compliance of the rules and regulations of anti-dumping laws with the help of which duty in many cases could be avoided.
