Despite the global economic turmoil and a fall in exports from the textiles and clothing sector, shipments of fabrics managed to float above the water and in the process were able to register a growth of 15 percent.
Total shipments of the fabrics reached US $73.23 million in the first five months of 2009, said the Peruvian Exporters Association. Dyed cotton knitted fabrics and fabrics containing elastometric yarn accounted for bulk of fabric exports.
The Peruvian textile sector exported dyed cotton fabric worth $20 million and fabric with elastometric yarn totaling to $12.4 million. Venezuela was the biggest importer of fabrics amounting to $46 million.
Peru exported fabrics to around 49 countries, which also constituted fabrics like unbleached/bleached cotton knitted fabrics; knitted denim fabrics; as well as fabrics with textured polyester filaments.
