As Asian trade to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean has increased by 19.1 percent, Sri Lankan shippers are now demanding proper monitoring of pricing at shipping lines.
Shipping close to 40,000 TEU's a week is affecting the cheaper freight rates Sri Lanka has had so far, with the extra 5,500 TEU's shipped every day.
While shippers do not mind price increases, they are concerned about shipping lines 'fixing prices' and adding on extra non-freight service charges with out any regulation.
The Merchant Shipping Division of the Ports Ministry has been requested to investigate the issue.
Sri Lankan exporters cannot recover extra fees from overseas trade partners and therefore are requesting that all charges be included in the rate charged by shipping lines.
Exporters also want all charges to be included in one freight rate, as the fees charged from them by shipping lines cannot be recovered from foreign trade partners otherwise.
The Apparel industry is Sri Lanka's largest exporter.
