scotland's textile industry players from all over the sector, from domestic & traditional garment producers to giant manufacturers of hi-tech synthetics, take notice of the warning "innovate or die" at the second scottish textiles conference, organize by scottish enterprise in edinburgh yesterday.
the managing director of johnstons of elgin and chairman of the scottish textile manufacturer's association james sugden explained that the industry has so much creative talent. the question is: how do we address these changing markets and how do we get the most out of people?
the manager of scottish textiles kirsty scott stated that, now that the industry is relatively stable after the 1990s offshoring and the post-9/11 slump, they should plan about how design and technical innovation that can help us win the continues battle to stay on top of the way markets are changing worldwide.
design innovation is repeatedly about trends and ideas. that's got to be underpinned by ways of thinking about how organisations are structured. we can't compete on price, we can't compete on production; so we need to be very much customer-led to hold our own in our niche markets,” he added.
