Flight out of country shrinks local textile industry

Taiwan Cotton Spinners Association (TCSA) indicated that there has been an oversupply of spinning yarns in the global market since 10 years ago, which has worsened in recent years as textile manufacturers in Thailand, Pakistan, Indonesia, and China have strenuously expanded their production capacity and fought for market niches with lower prices. Accordingly, Taiwan's manufacturers can hardly compete with them and have gradually lost their strength in the arena.

Currently Taiwan has a total of some 1.6 million spindles running, slightly higher than the corresponding figure of 1.5 million for Japan and S. Korea each. However, the total number of spinning spindles in the three nations is even lower than that of a large spinning factory in Shangdong Province of the mainland.

TCSA suggested that Taiwan's textile makers should produce value-added textile fabrics, combed cotton yarns, and stretch yarns for garment makers to generate high-end garments with functions of anti-bacteria, anti-ultraviolet, and absorbing perspiration & quick drying.
