Polyester-cotton yarn prices slipped further by ₹5 per kg in Ludhiana market due to slower demand. However, acrylic yarn gained by ₹5 per kg as crude oil based costlier raw material pushed up the prices. Polyester spun fibre (PSF), a raw material for polyester yarn, too traded higher by ₹3 because of stronger raw material i.e., PTA and MEG.

According to market sources, downstream demand for polyester-cotton yarn was very pessimistic because buyers did not want to take any risk.

Fabric and garment manufacturers were facing uncertain demand scenario. While PC fabric and garment demand remains seasonally weaker in summer season as buyers prefer cotton garment, the current Russia-Ukraine war has increased uncertainty for export demand.

Industry sources said that spinning mills were facing double pressure as poor downstream demand was dragging prices southward but costlier PSF (polyester spun fibre) was pushing up their manufacturing cost. Skyrocketed crude oil is disrupting pricing structure of PSF value chain because of costlier intermediatory products like PTA, MEG and MELT.

In international market, price of PTA increased to $1,040 per MT, and that of MEG to $752 per MT, because of stronger crude oil. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures jumped 2.59 per cent to $131.29 per barrel. Earlier, it had touched as high as $140 per barrel.

In Ludhiana, India’s most prominent man-made yarn market, 30 count PC combed yarn (48/52) was sold at ₹270-280 per kg. 30 count PC carded yarn (65/35) was priced at ₹235-240 per kg, while 20 count PC (recycled) yarn O/E (40/60) was traded at ₹190-195 per kg. Acrylic NM (2/48) was priced at ₹355-360 per kg and acrylic NM (2/32) at ₹295-300 per kg, as per Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro.

The price of 30 count PC combed yarn (48/52) eased down by ₹5 per kg, but 30 count PC carded yarn (65/35) steadied at previous level. The price of 20 count PC (recycled) yarn O/E also eased down by ₹5 per kg, but acrylic yarn gained ₹5 per kg due to costlier raw material cost. Stronger crude oil drove the prices of PSF higher by ₹3 per kg to ₹123 per kg.
