UK lawmakers voted on March 14 to delay Brexit after Prime Minister Theresa May's plans for leaving the European Union (EU) were repeatedly rejected by Parliament. The House of Commons voted 412 to 202 to support May’s motion, which sets out how she will ask the EU to extend the Brexit deadline from March 29 to June 30, if a deal can be reached by March 20.

The motion paves the way to the possibility of a much longer postponement. More time will be needed to find a solution and the United Kingdom will have to participate in European Parliament elections in May if no Brexit agreement is passed in another parliamentary vote by March 20, the motion said.

The EU has suggested it can postpone the United Kingdom’s departure until late May, despite lack of a unified position among European leaders and officials, who seek a clear reason from the United Kingdom for the delay, according to global news wires.

European leaders, who will meet at a two-day conclave on March 21 in Brussels, will have to decide what to do with the United Kingdom. There is division among them over how much concession to offer.

Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, tweeted that he would urge EU leaders to support a ‘long extension’ if Britain needed to ‘rethink its Brexit strategy and build consensus around it’. (DS)
