The Gujarat government set a target to raise textile and apparel exports about four times higher by the year 2010 to Rs 27,000 crore, which is currently Rs 7000 crore.

A joint venture of Kurt Salmon Associates (KSA), one of the world's largest management consulting firm specializing in the textiles, consumer goods and retail sectors, KSA Technopack has prepared a report 'The Gujarat Report - The Gujarat Integrated Textile and Apparel Revival Plan Report' for Industrial Extension Bureau (Indextb), a Government of Gujarat organisation.

KSA recommended policies to enhance the textile and garment industries.

Following the report, the Gujarat Government will be almost immediately launch its integrated policy to ensure textile exports from the state goes up.

The report suggested that the State should aim to convert all its fabrics into garments, and mark itself as goods supplier.

Gujarat should also target textile and apparel domestic market increase from Rs 4,800 crore to Rs 19,000 crore by 2010".

Chandan Chatterjee, General Manager, Projects, Indextb informed that new integrated textile policy targets to uphold the entire value chain from improving the productivity of raw materials like cotton to exports. The new policy will help to increase the textile and apparel exports of the state and will make Gujarat more competitive in the post quota era.

Gujarat accounts for nearly 25 percent of the total textiles exports of India. However, it contributes even less than 10 percent of the total export kitty.

Gujarat is one of the largest cotton producers in the country but, over 80 percent of the cotton output in the state goes to other states for value addition.

Leading textile companies in Gujarat such as Arvind Mills, Ashima Group, Welspun Group, textile unit of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) and Arvee Denims and Exports have already invested in raising their individual capacities and are exploring new avenues for export.
