Bangladesh finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has termed the approval of the resolution by the United Nations to graduate Bangladesh from the least developed country (LDC) status a ‘great milestone’. The UN General Assembly (UNGA) recently approved the decision to change the country’s status 45 years after it was included in the LDC category.

The UNGA adopted the resolution at its 40th plenary meeting of the 76th session.

Kamal said this is an international recognition of the indomitable development march of Bangladesh being made over the last decade, Bangladeshi media reported.

Bangladesh is the lone country to acquire the eligibility for graduation after fulfilling all three UN criteria.

When the UN included Bangladesh in the LDC group in 1975, the country's poverty rate was 83 per cent. It declined to 20.5 per cent in fiscal 2019-20 before the pandemic devastated jobs and income opportunities.
