Over the past several weeks, nearly 5,000 fashion design students from 30 universities across Mexico have put their fashion design, pattern design and marker making skills to the test in a multi-phased competition organized by Gerber Technology and sponsored by many national and international companies.

The contests assessed technical marker-making skills and overall fashion illustration talent using Gerber's AccuMark pattern design, grading and marker making software. Students competed against one another and against Gerber's AccuNest, automated nesting software.

The competition also included a round called “Mine, mine and only mine” presented by Levi's, in which students took a typical garment and transformed it into a unique fashion design. The final event saw students testing their skills to design an haute couture bridal gown.

Jorge de Leon, manager of Gerber Technology's Mexico operations, said, “The success of Mexico's apparel industry is founded on the strength of its educational institutions. For the last three decades, Gerber Technology has supported the growth of the fashion and the apparel industries in Mexico by focusing on the continuing education of the industry's youth. Gerber is the leading provider of state-of-the-art technology for this industry, and, year after year, we stand behind our commitment to educating the next generation of fashion leaders.”

Winners were awarded on Sept. 29 following presentations by designer Guillermo Leon, fashion analyst Anna Fusoni, Levi's senior manager César Mauricio Uribe, and Fashion Information Center director Peñoles Mónica Benitez. A prestigious list of sponsors contributed prizes including VIP passes to professional runway events, netbooks, mobile technology devices, sewing machines, designer garments and accessories.

Gerber Technology is comprised of four businesses that serve distinct market segments. These include the Composites and Automation Solutions group which serves aerospace, fabrication and construction markets with ply cutting, laser templating and laser metrology solutions; the Global Software Solutions business which offers the world's leading product lifecycle management (PLM), product data management (PDM) and CAD automation solutions for the retail, footwear and apparel businesses; the Sewn Products Solutions business which provides textile cutting and spreading systems to apparel and flexible materials manufacturers in all regions of the world; and Gerber Innovations, North America's only full-line manufacturer of automated cutting hardware for the packaging industry. In all markets, Gerber's solutions significantly improve productivity and reduce costs.
