After learning about the stunningly cruel treatment of sheep at the hands of the Australian wool industry, Hollywood-based fashion designer Samora, whose clients include Gwen Stefani, Penelope Cruz, Joss Stone, Teri Hatcher, Tyra Banks, and Sheryl Crow—has announced she will not use Australian merino wool in any of her designs until Australian farmers stop mutilating lambs and shipping sheep to gruesome deaths in the Middle East.
“Samora Designs considers the humane treatment of animals a very important matter and we will not support the Australian wool industry as long as it continues to support the cruel practices of mulesing and live export,” writes Samora Designs representative Marci Waddle.
Samora Designs joins a growing list of retailers and fashion designers—including Abercrombie & Fitch, Timberland, American Eagle, and Limited Brands in the U.S. and New Look and George in the U.K.—that have joined the retailer-led movement to reform the Australian wool industry.
India's Mohini Knitwares and seven top designers in India, a major importer of Australian wool, as well as Pakistan's Bonanza Garments, have also pledged not to use cruelly obtained Australian wool until mulesing and live exports end.
