Korean trade statistics till April 2005 show total raw and semi-processed wool imports (greasy, scoured, carbonised, tops, hair and waste) increased solildy from the same period a year earlier.
However, imports from Australia, the major wool supplier, saw significant declines for the period, while imports from all the other sources increased, taking Australia's market share now to below half for the first time in history.
A continued geographic shift in early stage processing, particularly from Australia to China, has brought about this change in wool sourcing countries.
Whilst cutting down the imports of greasy and scoured wool from Australia, Korea has become the major importer of China's wool tops.
With virtually no scouring plants left in Korea, there were no imports of greasy wool during the January to April 2005 period. Scoured wool imports also dipped year-on-year. In contrast, imports of carbonised wool and top rose sharply.
