According to statistics, in the first six months of this year, China imported around 2,02,000 tons of wool, up 26.8 percent compared to the same period of last year. The import was worth US $1.13 billion, a rise of 61 percent. The import price was stood at around $5619 per ton in average, up 27 percent. The supplier countries are Australia, New Zealand and EU.
Main importers of wool in the country are both state-owned as well as foreign-investment enterprises.
At present, China processes over 400,000 tons of wool each year, accounting for nearly one third of the world. Country's wool output is just over 1,00,000 tons annually, thus the nation imports about 75 percent of raw wool.
China has become the wool processing center of the world wool industry, however, along with this it posses a severe threatening to environmental pollution. Besides, most Chinese wool-processing enterprises do not have the advanced processing technology and lack the idea of environmental protection.
As a result, the wool processing has severely damaged the environment. Hence the Chinese Government has ordered to close down about 50 percent of local wool processing enterprises which accounted for about 70 percent of Chinese wool processing industry decreasing the output of the country.
