Dr. Md Dan Bin Md Palil recently, developed unique bullet proof vest made of coconut fibre, which provides all the protection that can be found in a regular vest. Professor talked to Fibre2fashion about his out-of-the-world innovation.
Dr Palil explained that being a Professor cum Researcher and holding a post as Deputy Dean (Researcher and Postgraduate studies), many Postgraduate Students work their Masters and Ph.D programs in Bio-Composite (Agricultural base/organic materials). Hence products like Coconut fibre, Palm oil fibre, Kenaf and so on are available easily and are cheaper with no commercial value in Malaysia.
“I am trying to help rural village peoples in upgrade/lift SioEcomony and standard living”, he said. Dr explains, “I been involved with Coconut fibre, since, early yrs 2004, 2005 produce Shell Helmet using coconut fibre (Deco Helmet)and matrix with resin (transparency look of coconut fibre). So, I started thinking of inventing potential future material of ballistic armour 'strong in strength and light in weight and cheaper in cost'. I started working and doing the research immediately around 2005. The future materials, light weight strong strength cheaper cost for ballistic armour for defense other purpose.”
As for how this vest is better than the regular jacket, Professor beams, “Indeed this creation has many plus points since it is not only cheaper but also lighter. I have tested my invention of future materials for ballistic armour in real firing testing range At STRIDE under Ministry of Defence, Malaysia, in 2006.”
He further said that Government has shown positive signs regarding the approval for mass production. Presently, arrangements are being made for mass production in terms of facilities such SME factory, equipments, budget, manpower and the right ownership for production.
