North Indian cotton yarn buying still poor, used PSF rises in Panipat

In north India, cotton yarn prices noticed stability amid slow demand. In Delhi and Ludhiana markets, cotton yarn was traded at the previous levels. Bearish tone in ICE cotton and domestic market also dampened market sentiments. Trade sources said that cotton yarn demand may not see much improvement by the end of this month. Panipat market also noted stability in recycled yarn prices. However, recycled polyester fibres were traded higher. Market experts said that the home textiles demand was poor but recycled yarn has witnessed good demand from alternative value chain of low-priced garment products.

Delhi market noticed slow demand of cotton yarn, and prices maintained at the previous levels. A trader from the Delhi market told Fibre2Fashion, “There was little possibility of improvement in cotton yarn demand in this month. The market is also eagerly waiting for political developments of new Central government formation.”

In this market, 30 count combed knitting yarn was traded at ₹265-267 (approximately $3.19-3.21) per kg (GST extra), 40 count combed at ₹285-292 (approximately $3.43-3.51) per kg, 30 count carded at ₹240-242 (approximately $2.89-2.91) per kg, and 40 count carded at ₹265-268 (approximately $3.19-3.23) per kg today.

Ludhiana market also did not see significant movement in cotton yarn prices. The market noticed below to average demand from the downstream industry. According to trade sources, there was bearish demand from domestic and export markets. Bearish tone in cotton prices in global and domestic markets also discouraged buying in the downstream value chain. It is very hard to predict about recovery of demand, though higher demand was seen in South India.

In Ludhiana, 30 count cotton combed yarn was sold at ₹267-277 (approximately $3.21-3.33) per kg (inclusive of GST); 20 and 25 count combed yarn were traded at ₹257-267 (approximately $3.09-3.21) per kg and ₹262-272 (approximately $3.15-3.27) per kg, respectively; and carded yarn of 30 count was noted at ₹247-252 (approximately $2.97-3.03) per kg today, according to trade sources.

India’s home textile hub of Panipat witnessed increase of ₹2 per kg in raw material prices. Recycled polyester fibres were traded higher. Virgin polyester staple prices were hiked recently by manufacturers. It provided room for suppliers and manufacturers to increase recycled polyester prices. But recycled yarn prices did not see any movement. Traders explained that recycled yarn is being diverted to low-priced garment products like, innerwear, shorts, socks, headwear and many more items. It supported recycled yarn prices at present level.

In Panipat, 10s recycled PC yarn (grey) was traded at ₹78-82 (approximately $0.94-0.98) per kg (GST paid). Other varieties and counts were noted as: 10s recycled PC yarn (black) at ₹53-56 (approximately $0.64-0.67) per kg, 20s recycled PC yarn (grey) at ₹90-95 (approximately $1.08-1.14) per kg and 30s recycled PC yarn (grey) at ₹128-132 (approximately $1.54-1.58) per kg. Cotton comber prices were noted at ₹110-112 (approximately $1.32-1.35) per kg. Recycled polyester fibre (PET bottle fibre) price was noted at ₹75-78 (approximately $0.90-0.93) per kg today.

In north India, cotton prices remained stable in the last couple of days. Weaker trend in ICE cotton discouraged trading activities in the domestic market. However, north Indian market saw little decrease in comparison to fall in ICE cotton. New cotton arrival is not expected to begin before October, which is positive for domestic cotton prices.

Today’s arrival was 1,200 bales of 170 kg in north India. State-wise arrivals were noted as: Haryana 1,000 bales, upper Rajasthan 100 bales, and lower Rajasthan 100 bales. Cotton arrival was almost nil in Punjab. Cotton prices in Punjab ranged from ₹5,700 to ₹5,725 (approximately $68.55-68.85) per maund of 37.2 kg, while in Haryana, prices ranged from ₹5,600 to ₹5,700 (approximately $67.34-68.85). In upper Rajasthan, cotton was priced between ₹5,400 and ₹5,725 (approximately $64.94-68.85) per maund. Bikaner line cotton was sold for ₹5,700 to ₹5,800 (approximately $68.55-69.75) per maund. In lower Rajasthan, cotton was priced at ₹53,800 to ₹56,700 (approximately $646.97-681.84) per candy of 356 kg.
